The World Space Creators Awards is a design competition for design professionals and students to envision new concepts in shop style. Winning designers are commissioned to be part of a team that will execute the winning design for actual retail space development. This entry entitled “STYLEFOAM” was chosen as a finalist in the Professional Interior Design category in 2008. Styrofoam is a clothing store using recycled Styrofoam as its walls and ceiling. The concept revolves around the idea of the Styrofoam as packaging for a certain object. The Styrofoam is meant to fit the object it holds perfectly. Likewise, the clothes on the rack are meant to function in a similar way – as “packaging” for the wearer, a perfect fit for the human body.

Izumi Sake Bar is a new concept restaurant in Forbeswood Heights, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. We were asked to design its interiors as well as their brand identity. The design aesthetic is a blend of traditional Japanese iconography and modern design elements. The interiors are modeled on a typical Japanese bar, with clean but striking interiors. It also features a pole for the patrons’ entertainment. For their brand identity, we also designed their placemats, menu, uniforms, flyers, etc. to create a unified look for the restaurant.

Paradise asked us to create the visual identity of their new ice cream concept store. Their concept of ice cream is healthy, organic, and has a Japanese flavor. Some of their signature flavors are Wasabi, Pumpkin and Malunggay. We used green, black and white as their brand colors which can be seen in their logo, packaging, uniform and store design. We also created a typographic design pattern of their menu which can be seen on the wall and on their packaging to highlight their specialty ice cream offerings. Other design motifs used were the wave pattern (inspired by melting ice cream) and the stylized floral pattern (inspired by tropical paradise). All these design motifs and elements combine to create a cohesive brand image that is friendly, approachable and memorable.

LINX Japan asked us to develop their new brand of casual shoes, belts, and other fashion accessories. We created the new brand concept PLAY – Play Life, Play Music, Play Sports. We chose 9 PANTONE colors to create their brand identity as Play colors. The main challenge for this creative media office in Hong Kong was to disguise the irregular and triangular shape of the space to make it feel more expansive. The use of angular walls evoking the shape of a pentagon makes one feel that the space has more than just three sides. The pentagon-shaped entrance room features LED cove lighting that changes colors. This company’s slogan is prominently displayed in the entrance room using magnets, which can be moved at will by employees or visitors. This stimulates creativity and adds a playful element to the design of the office. Overall, the design shows distinction in style by being elegant, comfortable, functional, and by embracing the company’s philosophy of “good innovation.”
